Introduction

Preliminary

This is a work in progress documentation for the CloudOfTheBox cloud turnkey solution. It will be updated on the go.

The available documentation focusses on the OpenStack cloud-middleware usecase. The levers to operate arbitrary middlewares are existing and will be documented in the near future

About COTB

The challenges of operating a cloud middleware like OpenStack goey way beyond the mere installation and configuration of the OpenStack software. Service and sofware component related aspects like

  • Scheduling
  • Configuration
  • Installation
  • Network interconnection

are left to the operators choice. Of course this is desirable, as maximum flexibility is a very important requirement when operating complex infrastructure. Similar challenges arise in the layers below the actual OpenStack middleware. An abstract operating system does not make any assumptions regarding its

  • Configuration
  • Maintenance
  • Bare Metal Installation

Futhermore, an the bare metal itself has no concept of

  • Delivery
  • Fleet Management
  • Remote Access

Of course, there are solutions on how to perform these operations on OpenStack, operating systems and bare metal. However, these tend to isolated and do not consider a holistic approch.

Takeaway

CloudOfTheBox closes these gaps by providing such a holistic approach that integrates state of the art concepts and technologies to self-conciously operate complex cloud middlewares from the bare metal ground up.

Getting started

To get started see the left sidebar to read further details. We suggest to read more details about the layered infrastructure approach as briefly described above in the architecture section.

Alternatively, have a look at the configuration section to learn more about configuration by crafting inventory files.
